Jagged Little Pill the Broadway Musical

During this once again unsure time I had the privilege of getting to see a Broadway show in New York City amidst the new shutdowns. This had to be one of my favorite musicals I have ever seen, below Dear Evan Hansen which will always be my all time favorite. The infamous third album Jagged Little Pill by singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette explores the rough parts of her life and the struggle of being a women in our modern society. The musical handles every social issue under the sun, including (misogyny, racism, transracial adoption, transphobia, classism, disability rights, opiate addiction, and sexual assault etc.) with many references to the #MeToo movement and the fight for equal rights for women. It is not your typical broadway show, it breaks the mold of conversations we often find uncomfortable, the show even includes those exact words in the script during the last act. “If these conversations make you uncomfortable, they should." Similar to Dear Evan Hansen, Jagged Little Pill talks about real issues that young people face these days typically brought on by societal pressure.

The stars of the show being up and coming actress/singer Kathryn Gallagher from hit series on Netflix “YOU” and Lauren Patten who belted Morissette’s massive radio hit “You Oughta Know” receiving a standing ovation from the audience. This show included some of the most powerful voices I have ever heard, each song and each lyric seemed to reverberate through the theatre touching every heart of every member of the audience. As someone who was born in 2000 I am not thoroughly familiar with Alanis Morissette’s music and had not listened to it prior to seeing the musical but after seeing and hearing the music, it is not something that I will soon forget. Every cast member is more talented than the next it is hard to keep up! If you get the chance to travel to New York City when the times are not so uncertain, if you can do it safely, Jagged Little Pill is a must-see performance.

It moved me and I guarantee it will move you and the many more audiences to come.

-XOXO Rachel
