Ariana Grande “Eternal Sunshine” Album Review

Ariana Grande's "Eternal Sunshine" has been creating global pandemonium since its release just 2 weeks ago with it being her first full length album release in 3 years. Drumming up 58.2 million global streams, it has made history by becoming the most-streamed album on Spotify in a single day in 2024 so far. This is also her sixth album to debut #1 on the Billboard 200! The biggest week of 2024 for any album so far!

The album delves into the emotional roller-coaster of navigating the aftermath of a toxic relationship, with many speculating that it draws inspiration from Grande's recent divorce. This theme of heartbreak is evident in songs like "bye", a disco-infused dance-pop track that packs a punch with its lyrics about saying goodbye to a past love and choosing herself. This is especially apparent in the lyrics below, as she sings

“At least, I know how hard we tried, both you and me
Didn't we? … Maybe, someday we'll look back with love
Didn't think you'd lose me, Now it's just too late to choose me”

But "Eternal Sunshine" goes beyond simply portraying the pain of separation. It's a complex exploration of the growth and self-discovery that can emerge from the ashes of a broken relationship. Tracks like "True Story" hint at a darker side to the narrative, while the album's title track itself reflects a hopeful yearning for brighter days. While there's a sense of empowerment, it's not a full-on "thank u, next" vibe.

Grande offers a shift from her previous work with a refreshingly nuanced take on heartbreak. Avoiding the saccharine sweetness of a typical "breakup album" and instead showcases the full spectrum of complicated emotions that come with self-discovery, growth, and the challenges of letting go and moving on.

In this new era, Ariana blends R&B style music with dance-pop, some even noting a 70’s disco influence mixed in with modern beats. However, there are also some familiar moments of experimentation, with the Intro’s, Interludes and voice memos, which she has been known to do on previous albums. This one even features Ariana’s 98 year old grandmother on the last track titled ‘Ordinary Things (Feat. Nonna).’ Whom has also made a voice memo appearance on the track titled ‘Bloodline’ from Ariana’s 2019 hit album “Thank You, Next.”

Overall, "Eternal Sunshine" is yet another hit with no skips! As we all know, she truly never misses!

It is a captivating listen that showcases Ariana Grande's artistic evolution and her undeniable vocal talent. It's a sonically cohesive and emotionally resonant collection of songs! Whether you're a die-hard Arianator or simply a casual music listener looking for something fresh, "Eternal Sunshine" is a body of work that is most definitely worth adding to your playlist.
