Conan Gray “Jigsaw” Single Review
Rising star Conan Gray has released a heavily rock-influenced single titled “Jigsaw.” Released on a whim, Conan gives his fans a taste of what is to come from his upcoming sophomore album. Jigsaw follows up ‘Astronomy’, ‘People Watching’ and ‘Telepath’ as the 4th single release in a year.
Within the heavy lyrics he sings
“I've changed every part of me
Until the puzzle pieces aren't me, at all
I look in the mirror, now I'm just a jigsaw”“You take every part of me, all of the things you need, then the rest you discard I look in the mirror, now I'm just a jigsaw".
Conan describes of not being enough for someone, and feeling the need to change yourself to fit like a “jigsaw” piece. Via social media Conan admits he didn’t originally write the song to be released, keeping it as a diary entry for himself as he endured the downfall of a toxic relationship. By the end of the song you can feel his rage and frustration as the guitar riffs get heavier. In the week of its release it soon became the top searched song on genius lyrics, showing his fans really resonated with this single. Conan felt so strongly about the lyrics he even hand drew his own cover art, depicting himself being cut in half by a pair of scissors. The drawing was in 3 separate pieces before combining to fit together, again, like a Jigsaw puzzle; another ode to the name of the song.
In the end Conan shares his hope this song will inspire his fans to stay true to themselves and not change themselves for anyone; whether it be a friend or significant other. On a personal note, this song is one of my favorites he has released. I was impressed and inspired by these lyrics from an artist at such a young age; it helps to know I am not alone in feeling I should change myself for other people. Feeling like a Jigsaw piece in the wrong place is never an easy feeling.
