Olivia Rodrigo ’Guts’ Album Review

Olivia Rodrigo's long awaited sophomore album, "Guts” gave the year of 2023 the pop of energy we all so desperately needed! Following the critical and commercial success of her debut album, "Sour," Rodrigo sheds the naivety of first loves and embraces a more mature and assertive sound. Many of her fans have described it as a raw, confessional exploration of teenage angst; anchored by a mix of pop-rock anthems, introspective ballads, and unexpected genre-bending experimentation.

"Guts" became the 20-year-old’s second No. 1 album, in not only the United States but in 14 other countries, including Australia, Germany, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. In its first week of release; it also charted all 12 of its tracks in the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100. Cementing Olivia’s spot as one of the most compelling and authentic young voices of her generation. With her fearless songwriting, powerful vocal tones, and willingness to explore the depths of bratty rocker-chick anthems and soul-searching ballads, and even a little naughtiness! Rodrigo has created an album that is both deeply personal and universally relatable. It could also be slot into the soundtrack of any classic coming-of-age, high school chic flick.

Standout tracks include the electrifying pop-punk anthem "Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl" the vulnerable ballad "The Grudge" and the genre-bending "All American Bitch" an ambitious and bold track that blends influences of pop, and rock music.

She has once again crafted a thematic collection of songs that delve deeper into the complexities of toxic relationships, betrayal, and self-discovery with vocals that are stronger and more confident than ever before; better showcasing her range and expressiveness. Her lyrics are often sharp, witty, and unapologetically honest, capturing the raw emotions of a young female in the pop industry with unflinching clarity.

If you haven’t already been streaming nonstop as I have, “Guts” is an essential listen for any fan of pop music or anyone who has ever experienced the tumultuous emotions of teenage life.
