Miley Cyrus ‘Used To Be Young’ Single Review
Miley Cyrus's latest single, "Used to Be Young," is a reflective ballad that confronts her Disney past by exploring the passage of time and the changes that come with it. The song is a stark contrast to her pop-rock and synth-pop sound and is a welcome change of pace from Cyrus's recent releases. Opting for a more understated and mature vibe, the introspective song showcases her growth as an artist. At 30 years old, Cyrus is still being herself, even as that self changes.
In the visuals for her newly released single, the pop star bursts into tears as she sang. The lyrics are incredibly honest, as Cyrus addresses both the regrets and joys of her youth; while at the same time paying homage to her Hannah Montana days. She acknowledges the mistakes she’s made and the ways she has grown and changed. The chorus is particularly poignant, as she sings,
"I know I used to be crazy
Messed up, but, God, was it fun
I know I used to be wild
That's 'cause I used to be young"
While the song is primarily a slow song, there are subtle touches of Cyrus's rock edge. The guitars add a bit of grit and power to the track, and Cyrus's vocals are strong and confident. This blend of styles creates a unique sound that is both nostalgic and modern. In a statement released along with her single, Miley mentioned the song is about “honoring who we’ve been, loving who we are and celebrating who we will become.”
Overall, as someone who has been a fan of Miley since the early years, this has been one of my favorite releases of hers to date! If you have not gotten the chance to hear it, I highly recommend giving it a listen!
“Used To Be Young” is the kind of tune that is sure to resonate with fans of all ages who can relate to the experience of growing up and looking back upon their youth and regretting some of the decisions they have made, but accepting what has gotten them to where they are. Miley Cyrus is what I would consider to be the ultimate example of a true success story!
